The floors were professionally done, but I had the task of removing the ugly fluorescent light fixtures (there were two) that were in the kitchen. What made the task even more painful, was that is was encased in this molding whatyamacallit (sorry, don't know the name). You can see it in the before pictures. That thing was heavy, and I had to use a pry tool to remove it little by little on each corner. Why would any one decide to put one of those ugly things, I don't know. Then I had to patch up the holes left by the fluorescent lights, four in total.
I would love to have a mini chandelier in the kitchen, but the electrical box is not made for heavy light fixtures, so I decided to go ahead and install track lighting. My husband thought it would look tacky, but hubby did not realize that they come in different styles and colors now, than they did back in his days :)

Some other things I did was, installed under cabinet lighting and also on top, put molding on the window, paint, add an island and new window coverings. The breakfast area is right off the kitchen, and it has gone thru it's little makeover too:

And here are the after pictures:
| I bought the island at a garage sale |
I re-covered the chairs to match the pillows on the couch in the family room. I also got a new chandelier, this is the same one that Pottery Barn sells (Bellora) but I got it at Overstock for much less.
The biggest change I made in the kitchen was installing under cabinet lighting, it cost about $75 for all the lights, and honestly, it was money well spent, love how the kitchen looks at night because of the lights, and they are so easy to install.
I wish I had had true before and during pictures, but back then, I did not even know blogs existed. I have so many changes to the house, and it would had been fun to have showed everyone.
There are still some changes I would like to make to the kitchen, like paint the cabinets white, change the hardware, replace the backsplash with subway tile or mosaic, get new countertops, and new sink and faucet, but unless I win the lottery, that is not happening any time (or years) soon.
Hope you enjoyed the little tour of my little kitchen and breakfast area.

ReplyDeleteCame over from Sherry's. Love yopur kitchen! You have done some great new changes. Can you tell me how much room is betweeen the island and your counters???? I have alays wanted an island but didn't think I had enough room. Your breakfast room is sweet too. Thanks for the tour. XO,Pinky
ReplyDeleteIt is about 23 inches away from the counters on all sides. I too thought that I could never have an island, but I really wanted one as well, and took the plunge. It does get a little crowded sometimes, but not often that it bothers me.
DeleteEverything looks fabulous! What a gorgeous kitchen, so beautifully presented. I am now a follower of your blog and look forward to return visits. I invite you to join me as well on my blog at http://atastefultouch.blogspot.com

Great mini-make-over! It's wonderful when just a few changes make such a difference. If you ever get tired of the track lighting and want a "real" chandelier, it is not difficult to do. Replace the box with one designed to support a fan-light. (Home Depot, Lowes and Ace Hardware carry these in their lighting department.) This is a special kit with metal brackets that slip into the hole and tighten against the wooden beams that support your ceiling.
ReplyDeleteAnother trick I have used MANY times, is to swag my light from the box. Use a ceiling hook designed to support a hanging plant. Trust me, unless your ceiling is falling apart, the molly bolt on the back of the hook will support your chandelier just fine.
It looks like you have 10" ceilings so you could also hang a pot-rack light fixture over your island. If the rack is supported by 4 chains, attach each chain to a hook. Otherwise, replace the box as decribed above and you are set to go! Please visit my Facebook page: "Champagne Taste (on a beer bottle budget)" for many other "how to" and "where to buy" tips. Happy decorating!
So pretty! I'm loving your floors and your garage sale island - what a deal ! Don't you just love under cabinet lighting? I swear, in the mornings, I turn that on first, to ease into the day. ;-). Thanks so much for linking up to my first Room Evolution party - looking forward to seeing more!
ReplyDeleteI love everything about your kitchen and eat-in area! I love the colors, the furniture and fabric choices...seriously...when are you free to come and do mine? ;)
ReplyDeleteWould love to know the yellow color you used in Kitchen, Nook and Family Room please.
